Pre WW2 December 1938 Dated Japanese Civilian Sword With Possible Gendaito Artisan Smith Signed Regulation Military Length Blade Possibly ‘TOMO KAZU SUKE’ / ‘SUKE MITSU’ With Scabbard & Expert Assessment. Sn 20547. -. This sword has been assessed by a UK based Japanese sword expert Bill Tagg. His assessment accompanies this piece. In exerts from the assessment he states “Civilian katana, pre-war manufacture December 1938. This blade possibly made by an artisan & not trained sword smith. The mei (signature) is crudely written, especially the 1st kanji of name, cannot pin it down, tried numerous translations could be ‘Tomo Mitsu’, ‘Kazu Mitsu’ or ‘Suke Mitsu’. There is one Suke Mitsu showa period, a smith working as a gunto arsenal smith. Regulation military length at 25 ½”, no arsenal marks could be basic Gendai. Or high grade showa-to with a Nioi oil tempered blade, hamon unusual Hosho Suguha, no grain visible, a very clumsy looking sword, not in good polish. Saya good quality Honoki wood with thick black lacquer with its Kurikata for Sageo cord. Tsuba is Mokko (4 lobe) shape in a Sentoku brass metal possibly been blackened to match Shakudo Fuchi & Kashira on hilt (Tsuka). With Gunto Cherry Blossom menuki. Hilt with brown ito tape which is frayed with age. An interesting example, needs more research”. In illustrations of the blade & tang which accompany the assessment, Bill states that the cutting edge is 25 ½”, total length is 32 ¼”. He translates the tang date & signature as far as possible and describes other blade characteristics and dimensions (illustrated). British 1827/46 Pattern Parade Condition Royal Navy Officers Sword. EIIR. #2310006. This parade condition British EIIR Royal Navy officer’s sword was made by Firmin & Son of London. Firmin, founded in 1655, is the oldest British military outfitter and sword maker still in business today.The 794mm single-edged blade has a narrow fuller below a flat spine that tapers to a double-edged spear point. The blade is etched with rope fouled oak boughs surrounding a rayed crown and the royal cypher of the late Queen Elizabeth II. The obverse of the blade bears the Royal Navy fouled anchor motif below a rayed crown, between fouled oak leaves and acorns.The etching is crisp and clear. The blade is in near mint condition and, given a polish, parade ready.The ricasso bears the Firmin logo, a caged lion above the name, FIRMIN and the legend, “Established 1655.” The obverse ricasso bears Firmin’s etched proof mark.The solid half-basket guard is plated with 24 carat gold and is in excellent condition. The bowl of the guard bears the Georgian crown and fouled anchor of the Royal Navy. The inner folding guard is in perfect working order and mates with the pin on the scabbard.The mane of the highly detailed lion head pommel forms the back strap and the “D” guard extends from below the lion’s chin. The twisted copper wire wrap is present and correct. The blade is firm in the hilt.The sword is complete with its black leather scabbard with 24 carat gold plated mounts. The scabbard is in excellent condition with a slight crease towards the chape, caused by the careless drawing of the sword. The sword sheaths and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.This Queen Elizabeth II Royal Navy officer’s sword is in parade ready condition and would be a great sword for a serving officer. Spanish sword with French trophy blade. This interesting sword combines the hilt of a Spanish 1796 pattern Heavy Cavalry sword with a modified French Cuirassier sword.The Spanish were one of the first European countries to adopt specific standardisation for their military swords. They were authorised by the Royal Ordinance of the 12th of July of 1728 for all Spanish Cavalry of the Spanish Empire. There were a few evolutions in these standards; 1728 established a butterfly cup hilt and broadsword blade for the cavalry. 1768 established a separate backsword for dragoons. The 1796 policy adopted the bell guarded hilt as the new cavalry standard. Several example are exhibited in the Museu Militar in BarcelonaThe sword is emblematic sword of the Napoleonic period. A straight bladed double fullered Cuirassier sword stamped with the "M" under a circle/star of Controleur 1re Classe Jean-Jacques Mouton (23 nov. 1793- 21 feb 1809) The blade has been modified, with one of the sides ground down and sharpened to provide a cutting edge. Overall the blade has also been shortened and the tip re-profiled.

**MATCHING NUMBERS, BLADE NUMBERED ON SIDE**Original, WW2 Japanese NCO’s Type 95 Katana With ‘The Lijima Swords Factory’ & Toyo 1st Arsenal Arsenal Marks & Scabbard. Sn 20906 -. This is an original WW2 Japanese NCO’s Katana and scabbard. The sword has the typical aluminium cast handle with lanyard ring and fully functioning scabbard retaining clip. The hilt retains some of its original brown paint. Its early, fullered, 27 ½” blade is stamped on one side ’137879’ and with inspection mark (later examples were stamped on the spine). The blade has no damage and just light areas of staining consistent with age. The hilt is stamped with Tokyo 1st Arsenal Star mark, Lijima Swords Factory roundel with crossed swords mark and inspection mark (see pages 185 & 186 of Swords Of Imperial Japan by Dawson). It is complete with its original scabbard which has a single hanging ring. The scabbard has no dents and retains its original paint finish. The throat of the scabbard is stamped with matching number. This piece is clearly a WW2 bring back, surrendered or recovered from the battlefield. The price includes UK delivery. Sn 20906

Warwickshire Rifle Volunteers Presentation Sword 1876. A stunning Rifle Volunteers Presentation Sword for William Griffiths of the Warwickshire Rifle Volunteer Corps, retailed by Robert Mole, Birmingham. The 83cm blade with ornate scrolled foliage, sun burst design and VR cypher. It is etched &#acute;Presented to Serjeant Major Griffiths by the Officer&#acute;s, Non Commissioned Officer&#acute;s and Men of the No 1 Company on his promotion to the rank of Regimental Serjeant Major in in recognition of services rendered by him for many years as Colour Serjeant of the company, 22nd April 1876&#acute;. The decorated basket hilt is engraved with the regiment name and the wired leather grip is intact and solid. The scabbard is engraved along its length with an ornate oak leafed design. Some service wear overall, but otherwise in good conditionThe sword comes with accompanying research into W Griffiths, including the programme from when he was awarded the ’Volunteer Officers Decoration’ in 1893 for serving 33 years in the Volunteer Regiment (21 years in ranks and 12years commissioned as Captain)The Warwickshire Rifle Volunteers used a special and extremely distinctive pattern of sword unique to their regiment. This is often linked to their association with the famous sword maker Mole, who was a Major in the regimentThe enthusiasm for the Volunteer movement following an invasion scare in 1859 saw the creation of many Rifle Volunteer Corps, including the 1st Warwickshire Rifle Volunteer Core. Following the Cardwell and Childers Reforms, the battalion was designated the 1st Volunteer Battalion of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in 1883. Eventually becoming the 5th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment in 1908 and fighting in some of the major battles of WWI
